The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced relaxed rules for employers required to complete Form I-9.
- The rules were announced March 20, 2020 and are effective for 60 days, or up to three business days after termination of the National Emergency, whichever comes first.
- If working remotely, review of identity and employment authorization documents may also be done remotely, for example, via email, fax or video.
- Existing timing for the I-9 process remains unchanged.
- The I-9 form must include mention of COVID-19 as the reason for delay in physical inspection of documents.
