Change Is Never Easy, But It Gets Easier When You Take the First Step

If you had asked me a year ago about employee benefits, healthcare plans, or most things insurance-related, I probably would have been a deer in headlights. Like many people, I knew I needed healthcare, but I wasn't particularly educated on what I was paying for and how to get the most out of it.

My career has been spent in marketing, sales, and most recently, IT consulting. Today, I help employers navigate one of the most complex systems many of us interact with: healthcare.

At first, IT and healthcare couldn't seem more different. What surprised me most, though, wasn't how different they were. It was how similar they felt.

Both are complex (feels intentional, right?). Both can be overwhelming. Both are evolving quickly. And in both industries, people often struggle to understand what they're buying, how it works, and how it actually helps them.

The more I've learned, the more I've realized that simplifying complexity and helping people solve problems is what I enjoy most. That's a big reason I jumped at the opportunity to make a career change.

What scared me wasn't leaving my previous role. It was the unknown. Could I learn a completely new industry? Was I actually as good at building relationships and solving problems as I thought I was? I completely wrestled with self-doubt.

Over the last several years, I've learned this lesson more than once. My wife and I moved our family from Chicago to Milwaukee and had to build a new community from scratch. More recently, I stepped into an entirely new industry. Neither felt super comfortable at first. But, I’m happy to say both turned out to be among the best decisions I've made. Milwaukee, especially the people here, have made that transition incredibly rewarding. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with inspiring people and I don’t take that for granted.

For most of my life, I wouldn't have described myself as someone who embraces change. But as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate that change often creates opportunities we never would have discovered otherwise. It pushes us to grow, adapt, and reinvent ourselves in ways we never expected, often better versions!

I see that same opportunity unfolding across healthcare and employee benefits today. We're in the middle of a transformation in how people access care and engage with their benefits. Better education, advocacy, and innovative solutions are helping make healthcare more understandable, accessible, and impactful for employers and employees.

Breaking barriers isn't just about transforming industries. It's about transforming ourselves.

Too often, we wait for permission, certainty, or the perfect moment before taking action. We wait for someone else to create the opportunity. But one lesson I've learned is simple: nothing changes if nothing changes.

Growth rarely begins when we feel completely ready. It begins when we're willing to take the first step despite the uncertainty.

Take the chance. Bet on yourself.

The biggest opportunities in your life and career aren't always found. Sometimes, they're created. Go create what’s possible.
